"I changed my hair and stuff a lot actually."
Spencer smiled, "That's cool. My mom never let me dye my hair. I always thought it weird 'cause she let me get as many tattoos as I wanted, but as soon as I would talk about dyeing my hair, she'd say no." It wasn't usual for Spencer to share his thoughts so much around someone he'd known for only a few hours. He guessed he'd just taken a liking to Adrian, even if he had shown some unpredictability earlier. Spencer still liked Adrian, he trusted him, even if it was just a little.
After a while of rubbing, Adrian stopped rubbing the hair dye on his scalp, and Spencer just rubbed. Honestly, his hands were getting tired, but he didn't care. He was helping Adrian out. He liked that he was.
"We can actually stop now," Adrian informed Spencer as soon as he had asked."We need to hurry up, we should be in our room by now. I need to let it sit now. I guess we can just sit and talk while I wait for it to set in, then I can wash it."
Spencer nodded and looked at his fingertips, which were covered in the bright red hair dye. It reminded him of blood. In an instant, a memory hid him. He was standing in his bathroom. In one hand, he clutched a blade from a disassembled razor that you would use to shave. He looked in the mirror, tearstains on his cheeks as he looked back down to his wrist, which held many scars and healing wounds running up to about the top of his forearm. Tears rolling down his cheeks, he sliced his wrist. In an instant, blood formed along the little line on his wrist, pooling into a large droplet. The crimson liquid began to drip, rolling from the cut to the underside of his arm, and dripped onto the white porcelain sink.
"If you don't mind me asking, how'd you end up in this dump? I don't mind telling you why I am accused if you don't.. get scared or.. hate me or call me crazy or something like that. I wont tell you until you promise me that you're not like the others that I told."
Spencer blinked a few times, coming back from the memory. He looked up for a moment, letting Adrian words sink in. Of course he wouldn't call Adrian crazy. He knew how much words hurt other people. He wasn't slightly offended that Adrian would think he would do such a thing.
"I won't, I promise," Spencer said, giving Adrian a faint smile, "I'm not like other people. I hope you can trust me, 'cause I trust you."
"when I was younger I was fine. As I grew older I became the problem child. At the age of twelve I started showing unnatural behavior... I just liked fire. A lot. I liked burning things and I got in trouble in school once cause I brought a lighter and apparently you're not allowed to do that."
Spencer nodded, listening intently to what Adrian had to say.
"I guess I got in trouble a lot, even before things started to happen to me that didn't happen to other people. It kinda became my own drug, making people pissed off. It was fun and amusing. I don't know I just wasn't favored by a lot of people and I honestly didn't care. I was perfectly fine not being the cool kid and not having any friends. I didn't need them anyways, a lot of the time people are just annoying and mean, theres no point having friends when they could betray you or become mean and twisted."
Spencer nodded once more. He wasn't always the popular kid. He hadn't been 'popular' in a long time. He could slightly remember what it was like, having a multitude of friends who cared or pretended to care. "I understand," Spencer said simply.
"Anyways, when I was fifteen my parents noticed me behaving oddly. I was.. seeing things that" Adrian paused for a long while before speaking once more.
"You know what, nevermind I shouldn't talk about this with a total stranger. I mean who the fuck even are you. You could be working with them, anyone could. This why it's so dangerous to have friends. I should have hospitalized you when I had the chance, it would buy me more time."
Spencer stared at Adrian, eyes wide. He watched Adrian get to his feet and begin to nervously pace back and forth on the bathroom floor.
"Adrian, I-I I'm not-" He began to say before Adrian cut him off.
"It's to late now though, if you wanted to poison me or something stuck something in me then you could have done it already. It would explain why you hug me so much. You probably don't even really like me you're just using me aren't you!"
Spencer stood to his feet, looking terrified at how hysterical Adrian was becoming, "Adrian, I promise, I don't have ulterior motives."
Adrian reacted so quickly Spencer wasn't quite aware of what happened afterwards. The man sort of collapsed on the floor.
"Dammit I such a fucking idiot how could I let someone get so close." Adrian spoke, quickly shifting into a position where he was on his hands and knees and suddenly began smashing his head into the ground. Spencer watched helplessly in horror as his friend continued to smash his head on the tile floor.
"Adrian! A-Adrian stop! S-Stop! Please!" Spencer begged Adrian, his voice shaky in fear of what his friend was doing to himself. With every smash his head too, it felt as if his heart was being pummeled.
Suddenly, Adrian lifted his head up and scooted back until he was against the wall. His eyes seemed crazed, fearful. Spencer wasn't sure if he saw dye or blood trickle down the side of Adrian's face, but his heart leapt with anxiety all the same.
"I won't let them take me, if I die it will not be by anothers hand, I am to strong for that. I would rather kill myself than be killed by another.. but not yet. Not here."
What was Adrian even talking about? Spencer just watched the man, eyes wide in fear.
"If I tried that here they would find a way, they always do. And then they would put me in solitary confinement and that is really bad. I don't like being alone."
The man looked up at Spencer, a look of fear and determination in his eyes. Spencer scooted closer to him, very cautiously and slowly to make sure he wouldn't provoke him until he was about a foot in front of Adrian.
"Please... tell me you're not like them." Adrian spoke, looking at Spencer.
"I-I'm not like them," He said, looking Adrian in the eye, "I promise I'm nothing like those people, I won't hurt you, I won't scorn you, I won't leave you, I won't call you names, I won't treat you badly, I won't run from you, I won't use you. But please, please don't hurt yourself. It hurts me, too."
